What does the FAMILY Assessment measure?

The protocols vary depending upon the disability. In the case of hearing impairment, language. phonology, and auditory skills are quantified, as well as level of play, gross and fine motor skills, and visual skills. Important characteristics of parent-child interaction are summarized. A medical checklist is also included.

How are the results shared with the family?

All of the protocols are summarized and shared with family members and involved professionals. The results are explained in writing and in group discussion. The group meeting may occur at a clinic or in the family's home.

Who pays for the cost of the evaluation?

Different agencies have participated. including the Handicapped Children's Home Intervention Program, local Community Center Boards, individual school districts, insurance companies. and the Colorado Department of Education. Total cost is $200 for a complete multi-disciplinary assessment.

How does the child benefit?

Progress is monitored by measuring changes in skills. This information is used to develop goals and objectives on the IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan). The child also benefits from the parents increase in confidence and therapeutic skills.
