Consumer Advisor who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing

This position was created to assure the program is properly meeting the needs of young children with hearing loss.  It is important that the consumers feel a program for children who are deaf or hard of hearing adequately and accurately represents the perspective of members of the deaf culture and hard of hearing adults, as well.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with curricular areas of the program, e.g., family-centered intervention, amplification and auditory training, language development for newborn to three year-old children

  • Familiarity with systems of care for children with hearing loss in the state

  • Familiarity with transition services for three year-old children entering preschool programs

  • Ability to endorse a wide variety of communication methods

  • Ability to support parents and to endorse their choices

Credentials:

  • An adult who is deaf or hard of hearing

  • BA from an accredited college or university

Responsibilities:

  • Providing consultation to the program administration by meeting with the CHIP administrative team and Colorado Hearing Resource (CO-Hear) coordinators

  • Representing the interests of the providers who are deaf or hard of hearing for the program, e.g., adult role models, facilitators, and sign language instructors

  • Obtaining information, e.g., resources, curriculums, funding sources, from early intervention programs for children who are deaf or hard of hearing in other states

  • Pursuing funding opportunities for additional activities

  • Publicizing activities of the program
