The parent advisor acts as a resource person for families who are receiving services through the Colorado Home Intervention Program. In this capacity, the parent advisor can provide parents with information and help parents to become advocates for their child with a hearing loss.  The parent advisor assists the program administration by providing a parent perspective on policies and procedures. The parent advisor for the program represents the interests of families who have children who are deaf/hard of hearing to other parent organizations that serve children with disabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with families

  • Ability to work with professionals

  • Experience with young children who are deaf/hard of hearing

Credentials:

  • Parent of a child who is deaf/hard of hearing

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited school

Responsibilities:

  • Collecting information on related topics, disseminating this information, and maintaining a database of topics for parents, facilitators, and consultants

  • Writing and disseminating a newsletter for parents

  • Serving on the advisory board of Colorado Families for Hands and Voices, a parent-run organization for parents of deaf or hard of hearing children

  • Meeting CHIP facilitators, describing services for parents, and explaining how parents can access the advisor's services

  • Maintaining the lending library for the program

  • Creating and maintaining a mailing list with the addresses of all families receiving services through CHIP
