Guidelines for Participation as a Deaf Adult Role Model

  1. Adults will be hired in different geographic areas until each region in the state is represented. After this need is met, additional adults will be hired as program needs arise.

  2. The deaf and hard of hearing adult role model program (aka: Deaf/Hard of Hearing Connections) supports the concept that parents, schools, service providers, and other agencies choose the communication method they want to use with their children and students. The adults need to be open minded about personal or school-mandated philosophies and teacher/parent-driven best practices, the use of a variety of communication systems, and the use of amplification.

  3. Adults need to have a particular interest in connecting with children, parents, teachers, service providers, college students and organizations.

  4. It is important to be a professional, to have a career, or to be an established homemaker in order to offer a positive example for parents, schools, service providers, and other agencies. One's income cannot be dependent on government subsidy.

  5. Adults will collaborate with other service providers (e.g., the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind, the Board of Cooperative Educational Service, local education agencies) and need to have a positive attitude about working with these professionals who are usually hearing.

  6. Adults need to expect that communication will present some challenges in that interpreters are not consistently effective. The program promotes respect for the communication skills of all adults.

  7. Deaf and hard of hearing adults need to attend on-going meetings, trainings, and workshop sessions.
