Tobacco-Free Schools

The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind endorses findings of the Surgeon General of the United States that the use of tobacco products and the effects of tobacco smoke are not conducive to good health.  The administration believes that as an educational organization, the school should provide effective programs regarding the dangers of the use of tobacco products and set positive examples of healthy life styles.  In order to promote the general health, welfare, and well-being of students and staff, smoking, chewing, or other use of tobacco products by students, staff, and members of the public shall be banned from all school property and school-supported activities.

For purposes of this policy, the following definitions will apply:

1.         "School Property" will mean all property owned, leased, rented, or otherwise used by the school, including, but not limited to, the following:

            a.     All interior portions of any building or other structure used for instruction, living, administration, support services, maintenance, or storage.

            b.     All school grounds over which the school exercises control, including areas surrounding any building, playground, athletic field, recreation area, and parking lot.

            c.     All vehicles used by the school for transporting students, staff, visitors, or other persons.

2.         "Tobacco" will include cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, and all other kinds and forms of tobacco prepared in such a manner as to be suitable for chewing, smoking, or both.  "Tobacco" will include cloves or any other product packaged for smoking.

3.         Use of tobacco will include lighting, chewing, inhaling, or smoking any tobacco products.

Employees found to be in violation of this policy will be subject to appropriate corrective and/or disciplinary action.  Any member of the general public considered by the superintendent or designee to be in violation of this policy will be instructed to leave school property.
