What is the purpose for the CEIC?

The Colorado Educational Interpreter Certificate of Verification (CEIC) is a tool by which the state of Colorado can ensure that all D/HH children in public schools have at least minimally competent interpreting services.

Who should have the CEIC?

Anyone in a public school that is or can be put into the role of an interpreter should be on the database and working to obtain the CEIC.  This could possibly include Teachers of the Deaf, Paraprofessional, Teachers Aides, and any other personnel who would be in this situation.

What is the process for obtaining the CEIC

Contact the Educational Interpreter Standards  Coordinator (EOSC) at (303) 665-5888 ext 4235 and add yourself to the state database.  Interpreters will receive a status report.  Give a copy to the school district and in turn the school district will request a Temporary Interpreter Authorization (TIA) from the EISC office on your behalf.  This TIA will be valid for one year with a maximum renewal of two more.  During this time it is expected that interpreters on TIAs will be working to obtain the CEIC.

Obtaining the CEIC will involve two things; proof that you have satisfied the minimum knowledge requirement, and a passing score of 3.5 or better on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) skills test.  In regards to the knowledge requirement proof can be accepted documentation from a state approved program.  To schedule the EIPA skills test please contact the EISC at (303) 665-5888 ext 4235.

After obtaining the CEIC what are the requirements for keeping it valid?

Upon receipt of the CEIC documentation each interpreter has 5 years in which to earn 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).  Two of these CEUs must focus on skill building while the other two will focus on knowledge.  This requirement is to ensure that each interpreter will work to enhance both areas for their professional growth.

Knowledge CEUs can be obtained in a variety of ways, school district in-services, college courses that will pertain to subjects you are interpreting, workshops, etc.  Skills CEUs can be obtained in various ways with the stipulation that they must be accrued in 7.5 hour increments.  This is to ensure scope and sequence to the learning process. Documentation for these CEUs will be a certificate of attendance or an official transcript.  Please note that audited college classes will not be accepted as credit towards CEUs.

How do I renew and turn it my CEU information?

Six months prior to your CEIC expiring contact the EISC office at (303) 665-5888 ext 4235 and request a CEIC renewal packet.  This packet will include a form to record all CEU activities, and instructions for submitting all documentation and fee for renewals.

** NOTE:  All interpreters who obtained their CEIC prior to July 1, 2001 will be starting their 5 year cycle from that date.  They will not be due for renewal until July 1, 2006.  All interpreters who receive their CEIC after July 1, 2001 will be on a normal 5 year cycle.

Is there a cost involved with the CEIC?

Yes, like any other profession that requires professional growth and a system for verification of competence there are fees involved.  For more information about this please contact the EISC at (303) 665-5888 ext 4235.
