Student Life

CSDB serves students who are blind/visually impaired or deaf/hard of hearing from throughout the State of Colorado. Because a number of our students live too far away to easily commute, the  Student Life Department provides on- campus living. The dorms are open to students who live outside the El Paso County area. The Student Life program integrates the academics of the student's day with the recreation of a family's night.

Often parents will ask, "Does learning continue after school? Is there something for students to do in the dormitories? Are there opportunities for students to develop skills in addition to the academic areas"? Yes, yes, yes! The CSDB Student Life team is committed to providing a nurturing environment via a wide range of activities and learning experiences for every student.

Below are several key components to the Student Life Program:

After-school Programs are designed to increase a student's leisure skills and interests. Staff members provide a diverse choice of activities and work to develop the basic skills of each. These activities promote an environment of non-competitive interaction. This 3:00PM to 5:00PM program is specifically planned for younger children.

Athletics/Activities Programs provide opportunities to compete against other schools of similar size for the purposes of improving one's sense of teamwork as well as individual skill development. These activities include football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, track, music, speech, Student Council, running club, and Goaball.

The Peer Advisor Program teaches students to be better listeners, to better understand, help, and care about others and how to be a role model for the younger students on campus. It maximizes on the positive influence adolescents can have on each other.

PEAK Program

The Student Work Program offers older students opportunities to develop general job skills such as punctuality, responsibility, efficiency, and integrity. The on-campus jobs are 1-2 hours per week and include the following and more:

  • kitchen helper -- childcare worker

  • equipment/furniture movers -- tutor

  • clerical assistant -- athletic equipment manager

  • groundskeeper

Study hours are mandatory, and tutors are available to provide students every opportunity to be a successful learner.

Workshops are offered to students to learn more about "real life" experiences such as teen pregnancy, money management, and daily living skills.

The Community Service Projects provide students with the chance to "give back to the community" by helping others less fortunate than themselves.

The Supported Living Program focuses on improving the student's daily living skills. It's goal is to increase independence, privileges, and responsibility in equal increments. There are various levels in this program ranging from a regular dorm environment to living in an apartment on-and/or off-campus.

Family Living, similar to that of a family-like environment, has been proven to be successful in developing social and living skills. Groups consist of co-ed students with two supervisors and "live-in "big brothers/sisters to simulate a normal home-like atmosphere. This program allows a younger student to increase his or her communication skills.

The Traditional Living Program is for students, elementary through high school, who wish a more traditional approach; all-male and all-female dorms are provided. Designed to enhance opportunities to interact with peers, this environment helps students improve communication skills, and learn various daily living skills with assistance from dorm supervisors.

The Student Life Team always strives to ensure that every student leads an enriching life with our constant encouragement and support.
