INFORMATION FROM PARENTS ... FOR PARENTS

Since parents are central to the success of intervention services, CHIP makes an effort to communicate with parents and provide them with information and resources regarding their child's development. CHIP distributes a newsletter, collaborates with a parent group, and communicates directly with parents to facilitate the exchange of information and to offer support.

The Newsletter: CHIP, in conjunction with the Colorado Families for Hands and Voices, distributes a quarterly newsletter to apprize families about the happenings of CHIP and to inform parents about issues related to deafness. This resource is created by parents and directly aimed at educating other parents of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.  The newsletter approaches issues regarding: the deaf community, legal issues pertaining to deafness, siblings, inclusion, communication methodology, current research regarding deafness, and various other issues pertinent to families with children newborn through three years of age.  To subscribe contact parentadvocate@handsandvoices.org

Parent Group: Families for Hands and Voices, is an organization dedicated to non-biased support to families who have children with hearing loss. It provides support activities and information statewide to parents and professionals that may include outreach events, educational seminars, advocacy, lobbying efforts, parent to parent networking, and a newsletter. The organization strives to connect families with resources and information to make informed decisions for their children.

In addition to information about children with hearing loss newborn to 21 years of age, Hands and Voices organizes activities in order to allow families to network with each other as well as discuss pertinent issues regarding how the hearing loss impacts their lives. Hands and Voices can help families learn of the variety of resources and options available to them and how to access them. Through this network of resources, families can then make informed choices concerning their future in regard to education choices, the changing landscape of assistive technologies, and other issues facing families with children who are deaf/hard of hearing.  Families in the same region can share experiences and information to support one another, and they will be given the opportunity to gain strength and direction from other families who have faced the same challenges.

Direct Communication with Parent Consultant: In addition to the family support program, CHIP employs parents of children with hearing loss who can relate to the issues that families experience. The regional parent consultants discuss various issues with parents. The goal is to ensure that CHIP is meeting the needs of parents, and maintaining consistent communication so that families can receive optimal benefit from intervention services. Click here for a copy of the letter that is written by the parent advisor for CHIP and sent to each family that receives services from CHIP.

The parent consultants also link families with other families in their geographical region, or according to the age of the child or type of hearing loss for information and support.

Events for newly identified children with hearing loss and their families are organized on a tri-annual basis. Families in the CHIP program are given an opportunity to meet other families to support one another and to discuss issues about parenting a child who is deaf/hard of hearing.
