Families participating in CHIP receive their intervention services in the home and are assessed using the The F.A.M.I.L.Y. Assessment (a Family Assessment of Multidisciplinary Interactional Learning for the Young Child). The F.A.M.I.L.Y. Assessment is a naturalistic evaluation process that was developed by program staff 10 years ago. This multi disciplinary assessment process is comprised of a videotaped interaction between the parent and child along with a series of questionnaires completed by the parents. Involving parents in the assessment process has many advantages. Parents are accountable for reporting their child's performance. They make informed decisions as they participate in developing intervention goals. Parents seem to have heightened motivation to try new intervention strategies when they participate in the evaluation process.
Brief Overview CHIP F.A.M.I.L.Y. Assessment
Developed by the Colorado Home Intervention Program's staff, the FAMILY Assessment is a diagnostic tool. The child who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing is videotaped while playing with family members. The videotaped interaction is then assessed by trained coders who enter the responses into a statewide database.
