HIGH SCHOOL MATH DEPARTMENT

Welcome to the CSDB high school math department web page. Coming to Terms with the Reform in Mathematics Education. A variety of schools across the nation are currently engaged in reform of mathematics education. Here at CSDB, the high school math department is also ensuring efforts to enhance the quality of our mathematics program. This includes :
- Creation and implementation of innovative mathematics curricula such
as the basketball court math measurements project, which included
multiple subject areas (above photos).
- Emphasis of new topics (such as discrete mathematics, probability
and statistics) Students are involved in exploring, investigating,
describing, and explaining new topics. Our students study matrices and
matrix manipulation.
- Integration of disciplines. Our students learn to solve problems
pertaining to business and finance, agriculture and medicine.
- Less emphasis on rote learning and pencil and paper procedure, with
more emphasis on solving real world problems.
What is the role of parents as supporters of this reform? Most parents realize that children of all ages are encountering more and different kinds of mathematics than they did during their own school years. Most parents are supportive of the reform efforts. It is the role of teachers and educators to become proactive in involving parents in the processes of our mathematic reform. Through parent/teacher conferences, quarterly reports, and progress notes, teachers can keep parents informed of current mathematics education.
