Middle School Science

This year in Middle School we are studying many different topics in general science. Students are using a variety of tools and resources to learn about this information. Some of these tools include using the internet, science books, and magazines to research topics. In addition, hands-on activities are used to gather data and test hypothesis, and utilize power point presentations to share their findings.

We began the year by learning about the steps of the scientific method. Hands-on activities and science discussions help the students learn the process of formulating a hypothesis, collecting and analyzing data, formulating conclusions and then presenting these conclusions to their peers.

Currently we are studying the solar system. The students are learning about everything from planets to comets. Our field trip in December will take students on a special mission. They will use the vocabulary, information, and strategies they have learned to complete a mission at the Challenger Learning Center. Teamwork and skills from other areas will be required to successfully complete this mission.

This field trip is one way we are integrating this year's theme of community into the science curriculum. Students are learning to problem solve and will be able to apply the reason used in the scientific method to real life challenges and situations. The assignments and in class projects will foster independent learning, teamwork, scientific literacy, and hopefully instill a curiosity in the students to be more observant to objects and situations in their everyday lives.
