School for the Blind (K-12)
CSDB’s Colorado School for the Blind provides a rigorous, individualized K–12 education designed specifically for students who are blind or have low vision. Our programs align fully with Colorado’s core academic standards while intentionally integrating the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), which is a unique set of skills needed for students who are blind to access learning, build independence, and succeed beyond school.
In addition to instruction in literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies, students receive individualized and embedded instruction in areas such as braille, assistive technology, orientation and mobility, independent living skills, career education, self-advocacy, and social-emotional development. These skills are not supplemental for the students in the School for the Blind; they are fundamental to educational equity for students who are blind or have low vision.
What makes CSDB’s School for the Blind unique is our ability to deliver this essential instruction in a learning environment specifically designed for accessibility for students who are blind or have low vision. Highly trained teachers of students with visual impairments collaborate with specialists to ensure instruction is delivered using the appropriate learning media and adaptive tools. Small class sizes, individualized programming, and a campus built for safe exploration allow students to practice independence and problem-solving in real-world contexts.
CSDB’s School for the Blind prides itself on fostering a warm, supportive, and welcoming culture. We provide a safe and affirming environment for students who are blind or have low vision, one in which they learn alongside peers with similar experiences. In contrast to many mainstream settings, where a student may be the only blind or low vision learner in a classroom, school, or even an entire district, CSDB offers a unique community where students belong, are understood, and can thrive together.

Jonathan brings a broad range of experience in both direct service and educational leadership. Prior to joining the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB), he spent fourteen years serving in multiple roles with the Iowa Educational Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired, most recently as Chief Academic Officer, following his work as a Regional Director. Before transitioning into administrative leadership, he worked directly with students and families for nine years as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) and an Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist.
Jonathan holds a master’s degree in special education with a specialization in Visual Impairment from Northern Illinois University, a specialist degree in Educational Leadership, and a PhD in Education from Drake University.
His passion for this field began early through formative experiences working at summer camps and weekend programs at the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind in his hometown of Faribault, Minnesota. As a principal, Jon is committed to fostering inclusive, innovative learning environments that promote independence, academic excellence, and lifelong success for every student he serves.
“I love being able to watch students learn and grow,” he shares. “Knowing that I may have had even the smallest impact on a student meeting their goals is what keeps me motivated and engaged every day.”
