Online ASL classes for young families
CSDB Outreach Programs recently offered a series of online ASL classes for families on the Colorado Shared Reading Project (CSRP) wait list. Families needing support in Spanish attended one of the three series of classes. Each week focused on a different topic such as ABC’s, numbers, family, zoo animals, farm animals, community workers, emotions and food. Along with the topics and related activities, families learned a variety of common phrases. Different tips were shared to promote more interaction or language development, using the visual language model. The families are so thankful for this opportunity!
The families shared their thoughts:
*Immersion experience is wonderful with an awesome Instructor!
*Fun class – my highlight of the week!
*Great opportunity to continue learning ASL so I can communicate better with my son
*Class provides a chance to practice more signs with my family
*Interesting approach to learn ASL – helps me communicate with my three D/HH children easier
*Great opportunity to meet other families and to learn as a group makes it more fun!
*Perfect way to feel inclusive and to learn such a beautiful language
*The class helps me learn more ASL, and help my child’s language development
*Definitely want to keep learning – Instructor is amazing!
*The class improved my confidence and self-esteem – now I know I can learn ASL!
The families want more classes with books incorporated.
From Instructor Cathy Noble Hornsby, “It has been an amazing experience working with all the families and developing positive rapport.” ASL online classes are a great way to help the families feel comfortable and ready to learn more once they are matched with a CSRP Language and Literacy Instructor!
Again, the families really appreciate CSDB for this opportunity!
